Choosing the right seat depth
Sit or sprawl?
Seat depth is the distance from the front edge of the cushion to the backrest, and it decides everything. Under 55 centimetres, you sit upright — good for dining, reading, conversation. Over 60, you sprawl — good for films, naps, and Sundays.
Neither is better. The mistake is buying one when you wanted the other, usually because the showroom sofa was beautiful and nobody measured anything.
Measure yourself, not the sofa
Sit against a wall on the floor with your knees bent, and measure from the wall to the back of your knee. Subtract five centimetres. That is your ideal upright depth; add ten for sprawl.
Taller households should size up, and rooms under twenty square metres should size down — a deep sofa in a small room eats the walkways and the light with them.
Comfort is a measurement before it is a feeling.
Our depths, for reference
Our lounge chairs sit at 58 centimetres — upright enough for a book, deep enough for a blanket. The Fjord sofa runs 64, and the Drift modules 66, both firmly in sprawl territory.
Still unsure? Visit with a tape measure and sit in everything. It is the best hour you will spend on your living room.
